NATO countries are highly skeptical about Volodymyr Zelenskyy's call to shoot down Russian missiles over Ukraine, the head of the Polish Defense Ministry, Vladyslav Kosyniak-Kamysh, has said. He was not surprised by Mr Zielenski's request, but explained that Poland would take decisions in line with its interests.
‘No country will take such decisions (to shoot down Russian missiles) on an individual basis. I have not seen any supporters of such a decision in NATO,’ Mr Kosyniak-Kamysh said in an interview with the Polish news agency RAR.
In July, the Ukrainian president and Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk signed a defense cooperation agreement. According to Volodymyr Zelenskyy, it stipulates the possibility of shooting down Russian missiles over Ukraine. However, Poland's defense minister said Warsaw could not go it alone on such a measure. The Russian Foreign Ministry threatened that the country would retaliate if Poland attempts to intercept Russian missiles. German Chancellor Olaf Scholz rejected a similar request by Mr Zielenski.
