Central Bank of Iraq robbery

Stolen: Over $920 million

In Baghdad, another bank robbery took place, making it the largest in history. The mastermind behind it was none other than Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein.

Just before the start of the Iraq War in 2003, he arranged for three large trucks to be sent to the Central Bank. His son Qusay was also sent with a handwritten note requesting the withdrawal of nearly $1 billion to prevent it from falling into enemy hands. The money was then loaded into vans and driven away.

Although most of the stolen cash was recovered during subsequent raids, the story doesn't end there. While counting the illicit loot, American soldiers took hundreds of thousands of dollars for themselves and their families. Thirty-five service members were eventually caught.

Dar Es Salaam Bank

Stolen:  $282 million

The Dar Es Salaam Bank heist in 2007 remains shrouded in mystery, with $282 million stolen from the private financial institution in Baghdad, Iraq. It is unknown why the bank had such a large amount of American cash on hand at the time of the robbery.

Reports suggest that the theft was carried out by a group of bank guards, possibly aided by connections within local police and militias to evade detection at numerous checkpoints in Baghdad. The whereabouts of the stolen money and the identities of those involved remain unknown, with no further updates on the case.

The Knightsbridge Security Deposit robbery

Stolen:  $97 million

Valerio Viccei, who was already wanted for over 50 armed robberies in Italy, nearly pulled off the perfect crime in London in 1987. Accompanied by an accomplice, he entered a bank under the guise of renting a safe deposit box. Once inside the vault, they brandished guns and subdued the bank manager and guards. Placing a "closed" sign on the bank door, they allowed in more accomplices, broke into numerous safe deposit boxes, and escaped with millions in cash and valuables.

Viccei managed to evade capture by fleeing to South America, but was eventually apprehended upon his return to England to ship his Ferrari to his new residence.

The Securitas depot robbery

Stolen:  $83 million

The biggest cash robbery in British history occurred in 2006 at a security services company's warehouse in Kent. An insider recorded the inside of the Securitas depot in advance.

Subsequently, individuals wearing intricate masks abducted the branch manager and kept his family captive. They brought him to the warehouse and coerced him into opening the cash cages.

The group made off with approximately $83 million. Despite their elaborate disguises, some of the robbers were apprehended, and the makeup artist responsible for the masks became a crucial witness in the investigation.

The Banco Central burglary

Stolen:  $72 million

The Banco Central burglary in Fortaleza, Brazil in 2005 was previously acknowledged by the Guinness Book of World Records as the largest bank robbery in the world. A gang of 25 members established a fake landscaping business to carry out the heist. They spent three months digging a 256-foot tunnel that led up through the bank's vault floor. Upon gaining entry, they stole containers holding 160 million Brazilian real (equivalent to $71.6 million in 2005). Only eight individuals were apprehended, and just 20 million real was recovered.
