Illness and premature death

Behind the carefully crafted propaganda image of an absolute dictator lay a man consumed by intense anxieties, phobias, and deep-seated paranoia. Historical records, psychological evaluations, and memoirs from his inner circle reveal that Adolf Hitler’s life was governed by an array of profound personal fears.
From intense hypochondria to a terror of dentists and supernatural forces, here is an exploration of the psychological phobias that haunted the German dictator.

Severe Hypochondria and the Fear of Cancer

Hitler’s most pervasive personal fear was illness and premature death. He was a severe hypochondriac, constantly convinced that he was suffering from terminal diseases.
  • The Ghost of Cancer: Hitler’s mother, Klara, died of painful breast cancer when he was a young man. This event deeply traumatized him, leaving him with a lifelong, obsessive fear of developing the disease. Every stomach cramp or physical ailment convinced him that his time was running out.
  • Extreme Self-Medication: This fear of illness led him to rely entirely on his controversial personal physician, Dr. Theodor Morell. To combat his perceived ailments, Hitler allowed Morell to inject him daily with a chaotic cocktail of vitamins, glucose, animal hormones, and questionable narcotics, which ultimately destroyed his health.
Odontophobia: Terror of the Dentist
Despite ordering catastrophic military campaigns, Hitler was completely terrified of regular dental procedures.
  • Avoiding the Chair: His personal dentist, Hugo Blaschke, recorded that the dictator possessed a remarkably low pain tolerance and would panic at the thought of a routine dental checkup.
  • Extreme Reactions: On one occasion, rather than undergoing a standard root canal treatment over one or two brief visits, Hitler’s anxiety was so overwhelming that he insisted the procedure be spread out over nine agonizing days.
Paranoia of Poisoning and Assassination

As the war progressed and the tide turned against Germany, Hitler’s natural suspicion escalated into profound, clinical paranoia. He became utterly convinced that everyone around him—including his closest generals—was plotting his assassination.
  • The Food Tasters: He refused to eat any food before it was thoroughly tested. A team of young women, including Margot Wölk, was forced to taste every single vegetarian meal prepared for him, waiting an hour after consumption to see if they would collapse from poison.
  • Claustrophobic Security: He progressively withdrew from the public eye, spending his days in windowless, reinforced concrete bunkers, heavily guarded by multiple rings of elite security forces.
Xenophobia and Ideological Dread
On a political and ideological level, Hitler was driven by extreme xenophobic and racial anxieties. His entire worldview was built on the terrifying illusion that the "Aryan race" was under imminent threat of biological and cultural extinction. He viewed Marxism and international communities as existential monsters actively working to destroy Germany, using this manufactured fear to justify the horrific atrocities of the Holocaust.

Fear of Weakness and Lost Control

Ultimately, Hitler’s greatest psychological dread was appearing weak or losing control. He meticulously controlled his public image, refusing to be photographed wearing glasses, even though his eyesight deteriorated severely in his later years. He believed that any sign of human vulnerability would shatter the illusion of his absolute authority. In the end, it was this absolute terror of being captured, humiliated, and displayed as a trophy by the Soviet Red Army that drove him to take his own life in the Berlin bunker in 1945.
